A Caneyville man is facing several charges after having a DUI wreck on Yeaman Road and physically assaulting people who were trying to help him.

Thursday afternoon at approximately 5:30, Grayson County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Fred Norder and Deputy Jason Luedke were dispatched to an accident in the 1000 block of Yeaman Road and found that a Chevrolet Trailblazer, being driven by 26-year-old Daniel L. Craine, had crashed into a ditch.

Upon law enforcement’s arrival, Craine did not appear to be at the scene.

Then, “a truck, which had been leaving the scene” upon the deputies’ arrival, parked about 75 yards away from the accident in the roadway, when “several subjects exited the vehicle (and) began to yell for me and stated the driver of the Trailblazer was in the pickup truck (and was) highly intoxicated and out of control” according to the arrest citation.

The three individuals (one related to Craine, the other two friends of the suspect), including the driver of the pickup, “were forced to abandon the pickup in the southbound lane of traffic after Craine had physically struck the pickup’s driver,” the citation states, even though the people had arrived at the wreck site with the intention of helping Craine.

Norder made contact with Craine as he sat in the back seat of the truck. He had “blood on his nose and a cut to his wrist,” the citation says.

Norder removed Craine from the truck and detained the suspect as the sergeant observed Craine “was extremely intoxicated, displayed slurred speech and glassy eyes and very poor balance,” according to the citation. Craine, police said, was unable to walk without assistance. Additionally, the suspect was so intoxicated, a field sobriety test was not able to be performed.

Craine, at least twice, the citation states, admitted to deputies that he was driving the Trailblazer in addition to witnesses telling deputies that Craine was driving.

A blood draw was conducted at Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center and showed Craine’s blood alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit to operate a motor vehicle.

Craine was arrested and charged with DUI, alcohol intoxication in a public place, disorderly conduct, no driver’s license, failure to wear a seat belt, and failure to maintain insurance. He was lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center but has since been released.
