The Leitchfield Aquatic Center (LAC), closed last year due to COVID-19 concerns, will reopen this summer with restrictions and guidelines.

“I am really excited to announce that this year we have decided to open the Leitchfield Aquatic Center,” Leitchfield Parks and Recreation Director Tammee Saltsman announced on Thursday.

With the county and state still in the grips of the coronavirus pandemic, attendance will be limited and on a “first come, first served basis.” Other health and safety guidelines will also be applied.

“There will be some restrictions; however, I feel it will be an easy adjustment,” Saltsman said. “We will not be offering season passes because at this time we (are limiting attendance) to one-third capacity (248 people).”

Additionally, the hours of operation will be slightly modified to allow for cleaning.

“The plan is to open for four hours, close for an hour to clean and disinfect, then reopen for another four hours,” Saltsman stated, and as long as patrons keep their armbands on, people attending the first four hour session of the day will not have to pay again to reenter the facility.

“We are requesting that everyone wear a mask when entering, exiting and walking around the facility,” Saltsman said. “This is for the safety of our employees and community. Patrons will be required to sign a waiver upon entry.”

Saltsman said LAC’s first day of operation will be either the Friday just prior to Memorial Day (May 28) or Memorial Day (May 31), based on when Grayson County High School’s graduation is scheduled.

In 2020, officials projected the revenue generated by LAC to be over $200,000, according to Leitchfield Tourism Director Ilsa Johnson, funds that obviously did not come to fruition.

The bond/interest payment on the facility is $250,000 per year.
