Kentucky State Police is investigating after a Grayson County Sheriff’s Office deputy shot and killed a Caneyville man.
Thursday night, Grayson County Deputies Andy Vincent and Jason Luedke were informed that an anonymous caller to Grayson County Dispatch reported that 34-year-old Brian Richard Abbott, of Caneyville, could be found at 504 North Main Street in Caneyville, according to a law enforcement source not authorized to speak on the shooting.
Abbott, who reportedly has a history of displaying violent tendencies, and possibly possessed weapons, absconded from his post incarceration supervision, according to the Kentucky Department of Corrections, after being convicted of first-degree sexual abuse, third-degree sodomy, third-degree rape, and failure to comply with Kentucky’s sex offender registry. Abbott’s convictions took place in Breckinridge and Butler counties in 2013. He was released from prison about two years ago, according to the Kentucky Department of Corrections.
Vincent and Luedke arrived at the residence just before 10:00 Thursday night. Once inside the home, an unknown altercation occurred resulting in Vincent shooting Abbott twice, according to a law enforcement source not authorized to speak on the shooting. The details of what led to the shooting have not yet been released by Kentucky State Police.
Also present inside the residence was Abbott’s mother.
Vincent and Luedke performed CPR on Abbott until EMS arrived, but to no avail, as he was pronounced dead at the scene by Grayson County Deputy Coroner Larry Holeman.
Arriving at the scene within minutes of the shooting were Grayson County Sheriff Norman Chaffins, Chief Deputy Jarrod Mudd and Lt. Sonny Poteet. Also arriving and assisting at the scene were Leitchfield Police Officers DJ Newton, Kelsey Overton and Chance Anthony.
Kentucky State Police was immediately requested to investigate the shooting, with several Post 4 troopers arriving at the residence by 10:45 p.m. Two KSP detectives arrived within about 90 minutes of the shooting.
Abbott’s body was transported by Holeman to the state Medical Examiner’s Office in Louisville for autopsy.
