Grayson County Schools has had seven confirmed cases of coronavirus within the school system since November 30.

Two of the new cases are staff members at Grayson County Middle School, with another new case a staff member at Grayson County High School.

Two students at the middle school and one student from Wilkey Elementary School have also tested positive, along with one district employee.

According to the district’s COVID-19 Dashboard, there are six “active” COVID cases within the school system, with 56 people associated with Grayson County Schools in quarantine: 10 staff members and 46 students.

In total, there have been 43 coronavirus cases confirmed within the district since November 2.

Grayson County Schools has about 4,000 students and 600 staff members.

Virtual learning to continue

Grayson County Schools Superintendent Doug Robinson released a letter to parents and guardians on Thursday, explaining that virtual instruction will continue until after Christmas break.

The letter reads as follows:

The Governor’s Nov. 18 Executive Order, required all Kentucky school districts to remain on NTI:

  • Middle and High School until at least Monday, January 4, 2021.
  • Elementary schools until Monday, December 7 IF the county was no longer in the KY Department for Public Health (KDPH) red zone.

As Grayson County currently remains firmly in the red, the possibility of elementary students returning to in-person instruction next week is not an option. In many discussions with our local Health Department, there appears little likelihood that our community will experience a significant decrease before the Christmas break.

In order to provide at least some degree of certainty and to help families plan, Grayson County Schools will remain on NTI for all students through Dec. 18, with a return date of Jan. 4, as of now. That date will continue to be contingent upon the community health climate and any further potential state mandates.

The holidays are here, with their own set of challenges as loved ones wish to draw near during this special time. In the spirit of the season, let’s give of ourselves to one another by consistently following public health guidelines: wear a mask, social distance, wash hands frequently, avoid large gatherings, monitor symptoms and seek medical attention if needed.

Please continue to stay in contact with your school and teachers. Close, two-way communication between school and home will help bridge the personal connection we’re all missing right now, and allow us to better serve your student and your family. As always, district updates will be available on the Relaunch page at graysoncountyschools.com.

Thank you for your patience, your support and your grace on this continually winding road. Stay safe, stay positive.
