Grayson County’s Lady Cougar volleyball team defeated Whitesville Trinity 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-14) in the championship game of the 12th District Volleyball Tournament, held Thursday at Butler County High School.
Senior Ella Robinson led the team with 19 kills, while senior Chloe Cox added nine. Senior setter Brieanna Boll led the way with 22 assists while senior libero Bailey Richardson led with 12 digs.
Grayson County trailed just once in the opening set, at 0-1. Leading by three points, 6-3, Robinson served four straight points to push the lead to seven points, 10-3. Cox had two kills in the run, while junior Allie Dotson had one.
The Lady Cougars still led by six, 14-8, when Cox took the served and ran off four more points. She served an ace to take the lead to 10 points, 18-8. A Whitesville hitting error at set point gave the first set to the Lady Cougars.
The Lady Cougars never trailed in the second set. They were leading by a single point, 6-5, when Boll took the serve and started off with two straight aces. A Cox kill off the tape was followed by a Kenzie Skaggs kill, a combined block at the net by Cox and sophomore Lillie Payne, and another kill by Skaggs to push the lead to seven points at 12-5.
The Lady Cougars served their first set point at 24-17, but the Lady Raiders scored the next two points before Cox put away a kill to give the Lady Cougars the second-set win.
Leading 2-1 in the third set, Skaggs served a pair of aces in a 5-0 run that took the score to 7-1. Dotson had a block and Robinson put away a kill during the run.
The Lady Cougars had a match point at 24-12, but again, the Lady Raiders scored the next two points before Richardson had a kill, her first of the year, to give the Lady Cougars the shutout win.
Grayson County finished a very successful season with a record of 19-3, the best record in the region.
