Two Grayson County men, including one who previously drove a vehicle into a pond as he fled police, have been arrested on drug charges after a traffic stop on Watershed Road.

Thursday night at approximately 6:20, Grayson County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Zane Greer and Deputies Rick Mehlbauer, Andy Vincent, and Sean Fentress were patrolling in and around Caneyville when Greer executed a traffic stop on Watershed Road on a white Ford F350 truck with no license plate.

Upon making contact with the driver, 35-year-old Joseph R. Parks, of Caneyville, Greer determined he was under the influence of an unknown substance. Parks was given a field sobriety test and arrested, according to the arrest citation.

As Greer conducted the test on Parks, Deputies Mehlbauer, Vincent and Fentress searched the truck and located a bag of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, police said.

Neither Parks nor his passenger, 44-year-old Michael S. Payton, of Leitchfield, claimed responsibility for the drugs.

Both suspects were charged with possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), with Parks additionally charged with his second DUI and possession of drug paraphernalia along with several non-moving violations.

Both men were lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.

In late August, Parks was arrested after twice fleeing the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office on Richland Road. Parks, who initially lost a pursuing deputy, was spotted about half-an-hour later when, in the 800 block of Richland Road, he turned down a farm access road, drove over a fence and into dense undergrowth before jumping from a stolen Chevrolet Camaro just before it entered a pond.

He was quickly caught after becoming entangled in a barbed wire fence.

In that case, Parks was charged with wanton endangerment of a police officer, theft by unlawful taking (under $10,000), fleeing or evading police (on foot, in a motor vehicle), DUI, criminal mischief, and speeding 26 mph or more over the limit.
