Kentucky senior U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell is speaking out on multiple issues including face masks and the potential of a second round of stimulus payments.

This week, the Senate Majority Leader has been touring different locations of the commonwealth as he gears up for a re-election campaign against Democrat Amy McGrath.

Speaking to supporters and the Associated Press in Winchester on Wednesday, McConnell said, “wear your mask.”

The senator said that surging COVID-19 numbers is currently the biggest threat to the United States economy.

“We can’t shut the economy down again — we don’t have enough borrowing capacity to continue to prop up the economy much longer — which is why the mask is so important.”

According the AP, McConnell has told other senators in private that they should set an example by wearing a mask and that there is no “stigma” to wearing one.

Adding to his point, he said “The responsible thing to do is to put your mask on and practice social distancing and help us get through this.”

When asked by news outlets whether he thinks masks should be made mandatory by Governor Andy Beshear, he said it is up to the governor to make that decision.

McConnell also said that Congress is working on approving another stimulus package to U.S. citizens. The senator is in support of a $1 trillion package that would follow up the direct payment of $1,200 sent in the spring.

Both the House and Senate are currently on a two-week recess and are planning to reconvene on July 20.
