Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the resulting social distancing mandates, the Leitchfield Aquatic Center (LAC) will not open for business this summer.
In a statement issued on Monday officials said, “With deep concern for the safety of our community and employees, it is with great sadness to announce we unfortunately will not be opening LAC this season. It would be almost impossible to keep the area sanitized for safe usage. Social distancing would be difficult, especially for our lifeguards during a save.”
The Leitchfield Parks & Recreation office will contact anyone who has already purchased a season pass “in regard to a refund.” Day passes given out for the 2020 season will be honored during the 2021 season, officials said.
“Due to the large cost involved in opening the pool and staffing the pool, between the parks and recreation, and tourism, which foots the bill … we’re not going to open it,” Mayor Rick Embry said at Monday night’s city council meeting. “ …. No more than we could put people in there, we would have maybe let them stay two hours, let them go out, stay two hours, rotate them. It’s such an expensive project, we’re losing so much of our summer already … we’re not going to open it this year.”
Anyone with questions regarding the LAC not opening this year is asked to contact the Leitchfield Parks & Recreation office at 270-259-4034 extension 224.
