An Indiana man who transported 12 children to Bowling Green to sell candy door-to-door not only faces human trafficking charges but the Kentucky Labor Cabinet has now filed a lawsuit against the accused for committing child labor violations.
Shawn Floyd, 55, of Indianapolis, was originally charged by the Attorney General’s office in July 2019 with 12 counts of endangering the welfare of a minor and one count of have a controlled substance prescription not in its original container. But a grand jury returned indictments for 12 counts of human trafficking against Floyd. He has pled not guilty to the charges.
Last week, the Kentucky Labor Cabinet filed a lawsuit against Floyd alleging he has not paid $45,000 in fines that regulators levied against him in August 2019 for labor violations involving the children.
Floyd is accused of bringing children from Indiana to Kentucky to sell candy for him for profit. He forced the 12 juveniles to sleep in one hotel room with three adults, authorities said. The minors were forced to purchase their own meals and water.
The youngest juvenile Floyd employed was 11-years-old, with several of the children under the age of 14. Kentucky labor law requires a person to be at least 14-years-old to be employed.
