The worker who filled a propane tank at the Crawford Street home in Millwood that exploded Wednesday night at approximately 6:13 reported smelling gas after filling the tank.

The tank was filled at about 3:00 Wednesday afternoon. The two victims in the blast that shook homes as far away as 10 miles away on Bloomington Road, Angela Young, and her seven-year-old daughter, Johanna (affectionately known as Jo Jo), were leaving the home when it exploded after being told by a family member that they should not stay at the residence overnight for fear of a gas leak.

Angela Young had just returned home from work a few minutes before the explosion.

Angela Young suffered severe burns over a large percentage of her body and is being treated at University of Louisville Hospital. Her daughter suffered a cut to her face and burns on her arms and back but is expected to be released from the hospital as early as Thursday.

Upon firefighters arriving on the scene, the wood frame structure was fully engulfed in flames, with most of the home already on the ground. A debris field littered the area up to 100 yards away from the home. The front door of the residence was laying in the front yard, about 50 feet from where it stood before the explosion.

LFD Chief Tim Duvall said the state Fire Marshall’s Office has been notified.
