A Leitchfield man has been arrested with a large quantity of methamphetamine after threatening to shoot his wife.

Monday morning at approximately 4:00, Leitchfield Police Officers Keith Harrell and Taylor Logsdon, along with Grayson County Deputy DJ Newton, arrived at an apartment complex in the 500 block of Johnson Street after a woman reported that 42-year-old Christopher Coates, a felon, had threatened her with a gun via text message.

Coates, who was near the Johnson Street apartments when he sent the threats, left the area when told the police had been called, according to authorities. But once officers arrived on scene, Coates drove back to Johnson Street, parked across the road from law enforcement and exited the truck before approaching officers, police said. For their safety, officers detained the suspect.

Due to the circumstances of the call, a search warrant was obtained for Coates’ vehicle where officers located a significant amount of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

Harrell arrested Coates and charged him with trafficking in a controlled substance (methamphetamine, his second offense), third-degree terroristic threatening and public intoxication (excludes alcohol).

He was lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.

Leitchfield Police Department Detective Kevin Smith was summoned to the scene to assist in executing the search warrant.
