A sinkhole opened on a Somerset street on Monday morning and nearly swallowed a garbage truck.

The incident occurred on South Vine Street, in downtown Somerset, as a garbage truck was leaving a strip mall parking lot. As the truck entered the roadway, the pavement collapsed, dropping the rear of city-owned 2018 Peterbilt truck several feet into the earth.

The driver, Russell Sneed, was uninjured.

Somerset Street Department Director David Hargis told the Commonwealth Journal that South Vine Street, between Market Street and Spring Street, will be closed for several days as crews determine what caused the collapse and make repairs.
