Early Friday morning, Kentucky State Police arrested a Leitchfield man for inflicting severe head trauma on a one-year-old baby.
Kentucky State Police spokesman Scotty Sharp said that Thursday at noon, Trooper Seth Payne observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on the William Thomason Byway. Payne followed the vehicle to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center.
Sharp said that after arriving at the hospital, Payne and Trooper Brandon Brooks discovered that 25-yeear-old James A. Garrigus, of Leitchfield, was transporting his girlfriend’s one-year old child to the hospital for medical treatment. The child was later transported to Norton Children’s Hospital in Louisville where the baby is listed in critical condition.
Based on the child’s injuries, troopers notified KSP Post 4 detectives that those injuries may have been a result of physical child abuse, according to Sharp.
The detectives’ preliminary investigation revealed that while under the care of Garrigus, the child suffered severe head trauma at a residence at 757 Clark School Road, in Clarkson, Sharp said.
Friday morning at approximately 2:50, Garrigus was arrested and charged with one count of first-degree assault and lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.
The investigation is ongoing and being led by KSP Detective Travis Sturgill.
Garrigus was previously arrested in Grayson County on March 9, 2016 on a total of 10 charges, including terroristic threatening, menacing, harassment, criminal trespass, and violating an EPO/DVO.
