An alligator has been spotted in far western Kentucky.

The Drummond family had been duck hunting on their land in Ballard County (in the Jackson Purchase) when they saw an alligator in a swampy area on Friday. WPSD.com reports that the family’s grandfather, Chris Drummond, snapped a photo of the four-foot gator with his cell phone.

Kentucky Fish and Wildlife officials said finding a gator in Kentucky is rare but not unprecedented.

Officials said the spot where the gator was seen is about a mile from the Ohio River and four to five miles from the Mississippi River.

Wildlife officials set up bait for the gator in the form of raw meat hanging over the water, but have not caught the gator. Authorities fear if they don’t catch the alligator soon, it could freeze to death.
