A second inmate in six months has died at the troubled Boyd County Detention Center.

Boyd County Coroner Mark Hammond told the Ashland Daily Independent that a 40-year-old male inmate died at the jail Thursday morning. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday. Authorities have not released the identity of the inmate pending notification of his family.

Kentucky State Police is investigating the death.

In June, 44-year-old Laura Riley, who had been in the jail’s custody for two days, died of acute methamphetamine intoxication. And in October, three inmates overdosed at the facility. Furthermore, over the last two years, the jail has been scene of a riot, multiple escapes and overdoses.

Jailer Joe Burchett’s term is over at the end of the year and a new jailer will take over operations.
