A state representative, who’s a former Barren County High School teacher, has pre-filed a bill in the Kentucky legislator that would prohibit corporal punishment in schools.

GOP Rep. Steve Riley, of Glasgow, wants corporal punishment removed from schools and child care agencies or facilities.

The bill states in part:

School administrators, teachers or other certified personnel office staff, instructional assistants and coaches and extracurricular sponsors who are employed by a school district shall not use corporal physical discipline, including the use of spanking, shaking, or paddling, as a means of punishment, discipline, behavior modification, or for any other reason.

Riley taught at Barren County High School for 31 years. He served as assistant principal and later principal at the high school, and was the boys head basketball coach. He is the brother of current Owensboro Catholic High School head basketball coach Tim Riley.

The General Assembly will consider the legislation in the upcoming session which begins in January.
