On Thursday afternoon at 2:21, the Leitchfield Police Department responded to Walmart on the report of a man attempting to steal a 55” inch television.

Upon arriving at the scene, LPD Officer Joe Overton found that the store’s security staff had detained 44-year-old Irvin Dales, of Leitchfield, after Dales was nabbed trying to steal television and other electronics.

Overton took Dales into custody and escorted him to his cruiser, which was parked near the front doors of the retail outlet. As Overton was opening the back door of the cruiser, a handcuffed Dales fled Overton, weaving through parked cars in the parking lot. Dales ran for about 100 yards before Overton was forced to take him to the ground.

Dales was transported to the Grayson County Detention Center where he’s been charged with felony theft by unlawful taking, third-degree assault of a police officer, tampering with physical evidence, and alcohol intoxication in a public place.

LPD Officer Chase Melton assisted at the scene.

On Wednesday, Dales wrecked a Dodge Caravan on the William Thomason Byway. The vehicle had no license plate and the registration expired in 2006. Dales and a female walked to the ER at Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center suffering from minor injuries. Dales was cited by police for having no registration and no insurance.
