Between October 2016 and June 2017 at least 17 Kentucky teachers were arrested for sex crimes involving students. That group of former teachers are now being sentenced for their crimes.
A former Leitchfield resident and Logan County teacher and coach became the latest former teacher to be sentenced to prison, as 30-year-old Adam Decker was sentenced on Thursday to 12-years after pleading guilty to more than a dozen sex crimes involving students.
Decker was sentenced in a Logan County courtroom on three counts of third-degree rape, four counts of third-degree sodomy, three counts of third-degree sexual abuse, two counts of possession of matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor, two counts of distributing obscene material to minors and a count of prohibited use of electronic communications to procure a minor for a sexual offense.
Decker, who was a social studies teacher and basketball coach at Chandlers Middle School, as well as an assistant basketball coach at Logan County High School, reached a plea agreement that resulted in 22 additional charges being dismissed. He will be required to register with the Kentucky Sex Offender Registry for the rest of his life.
The Kentucky State Police investigation into the allegations revealed Decker had sexual contact with a 15-year-old student and sent nude images of himself to a 16-year-old, according to media reports. The incidents took place between September 1, 2016 and February 17, 2017.
The following list is very likely not comprehensive, but the result of researching previous reporting and an online search shows that between October 2016 and June 2017 teachers from the following counties were arrested on sex-related charges involving students: Grayson (four), LaRue (two), Muhlenberg (two … one arrested was a student teacher), Warren (coach), Logan, Fulton, Jefferson, Boyd, Knox, Oldham, Woodford, and Boone.
Earlier this week, a former Boyd County High School teacher and coach, Michael Sammons, 53, of South Shore, was sentenced to two-years in prison for using an electronic communications system to procure a minor for a sex act. Former Muhlenberg County High School teacher Courtney Davis, 28, was sentenced in March to four-years in prison after she reached a plea deal with prosecutors that reduced her original charge from third-degree rape to unlawful transaction with a minor.
