A former Boyd County High School teacher and coach has been sentenced to two-years in prison for having an inappropriate relationship with a student.

Michael Sammons, 53, pled guilty in August to using an electronic communications system to procure a minor for a sex act. A third-degree rape charge against Sammons was dropped at the request of the victim.

Authorities began investigating Sammons, of South Shore, after a student told school officials in March that a female student was seen getting out of Sammons’ car.

The Ashland Daily Independent previously reported that Sammons was in his first year as a math teacher and coach at Boyd County High School when the incident occurred. He had been a teacher and coach for over 20 years, having previously worked in Greenup County and Portsmouth, Ohio.
