Former Kentucky U.S. Senator Walter “Dee” Huddleston has died at the age of 92.

Huddleston’s son Stephen said he died peacefully in his sleep.

A Democrat, Huddleston served two terms in the U.S. Senate before Sen. Mitch McConnell defeated him in 1984.

“When we each had the opportunity to share our visions for Kentucky’s future in 1984, I experienced Dee’s tenacity, competitiveness, and skill firsthand. He was a tough competitor, and I always respected him for his service to our home state. Elaine and I were saddened to hear of Dee’s passing, and I hope that the memories of his life will bring comfort to those who knew him in this time of grief,” McConnell said in a statement.

Huddleston was born in Burkesville and was in the U.S. Army, serving in World War II. He was also a radio station manager before winning a seat in the U.S. Senate in 1975.

He graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1949.

WDRB.com first reported Huddleston’s passing.
