Thursday night at 5:45, the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office, Caneyville Fire Department and EMS responded to the 92 mile marker of eastbound Western Kentucky Parkway on the report of a single-vehicle accident.

Upon arriving at the scene, Deputies Taylor Logsdon, Fred Norder and Kelsey Overton found that a Nissan Sentra, being driven by 18-year-old Leslie A. Swafford, of Leitchfield, had left the parkway and struck a rock wall.

According to police, Swafford, who was lethargic and in and out of consciousness at the scene, bent down to scratch her ankle as she drove, resulting in the Sentra entering the median in a curve. Swafford drove in the median for approximately 70 yards before the Nissan reentered the roadway and got sideways, skidding across both eastbound lanes and striking a rock wall. At some point the Sentra flipped onto its top.

Swafford had to be helped out of the vehicle by deputies and Caneyville firefighters. She was then treated at the scene by EMS and transported to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center before being airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital.

Officials had not received updated information on Swafford’s condition as of early Friday morning.
