On Monday, Grayson County Sheriff Norman Chaffins announced that he’s hired a new Lieutenant to replace the recently promoted Jarrod Mudd.

The move was necessitated after former Chief Deputy Corey Knochel joined the Greater Hardin County Narcotics Task Force, and Mudd, a former Lieutenant, was promoted to replace Knochel. In a statement, Sheriff Chaffins said Sonny Poteet, a retired Louisville Metro Police Officer, was hired on November 9 as the new Lieutenant with the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office.

“This is a win/win for the citizens of Grayson County,” Chaffins said. “We have added another 20-plus years of experience in hiring Sonny.”

Poteet was raised in Grayson County and has “maintained a great working relationship with Grayson County law enforcement,” Sheriff Chaffins said.

Sheriff Chaffins added that Poteet brings many years of experience as a crash re-constructionist, in addition to serving in leadership roles at LMPD and working several high profile cases.

The sheriff also praised Chief Deputy Mudd as his “new right hand man” and “a great asset to Grayson County.”

“Jarrod has been with the GCSO for many years and has earned the respect of the men and women he works with as well as the citizens of Grayson County,” Sheriff Chaffins said. “Additionally, we have doubled our drug enforcement efforts by sending Det. Knochel to the Task Force. Det. Knochel was a Drug Investigations supervisor when he was with KSP … and requires no additional training and can hit the ground running when going to the Task Force.”

Sheriff Chaffins said that he’s “excited about the changes here at the GCSO and look forward to the future with our new additions.”
