The Leitchfield City Council received a second presentation from the Lexington architecture firm charged with designing the new city hall and police station.

Brandstetter Carroll, after hearing concerns from council members regarding the nearly 20,000 square foot building after a presentation two weeks ago, made several alterations to the building, including adding a storm shelter area and rearranging some office locations.

Also presented to city council members were four exterior designs for the building, which will be constructed on the William Thomason Byway, just south of Parkland Manor Apartments.

The new proposed building would grow to just over 23,000 square feet and cost about $6.8 million, an increase of approximately $753,000.

Council members will mull the new building specs and exterior look, and discuss options at upcoming sessions.

Council approves 2017-2018 tax rates

Council members heard and approved the second reading of the city’s proposed 2017-2018 tax rates.

Presented by city Finance Officer Kim Sowders, the city’s Assessed Value, or fair market value, increased about $10 million, resulting in a slight lowering of tax rates that will produce more revenue.

  • The real property tax rate has been lowered from 12.225 percent to 12.20 percent, but will produce $12,301 more revenue for the city.
  • The personal property tax rate was lowered from 21.316 percent to 19.721 percent, resulting in a revenue increase of almost $4,500.
  • The 12.0 percent motor vehicle tax rate remains the same.
