The search for a Shelby County girl missing for nearly 15 months has expanded as the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) has launched a nationwide search effort.
Serenity McKinney, 4, was last seen by extended family members on December 24, 2020. It was Serenity’s extended family who reported her missing on January 31, 2022.
“There was no contact, (Serenity’s mother) wouldn’t FaceTime with Serenity, she wouldn’t let me see her,” Aundria Wainscott, Serenity’s step-grandmother told WAVE.com. “That’s when we started thinking something’s really not right. We’re very scared, we’re very scared at this point.”
Serenity’s mother Catherine “Abby” McKinney and her boyfriend, Dakota Hill chose not to cooperate with police upon law enforcement learning of the little girl’s disappearance, and left the area soon after Serenity was reported missing. Both were arrested in Colby, Kansas, on February 6 on a custodial interference warrant taken out by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
The NCMEC has created a video highlighting Serenity’s story in hopes of increasing awareness about the missing girl.
Without giving an explanation, initially, police said Serenity could be in Bullitt, Jefferson or Shelby counties.
The Kentucky Attorney General’s Office is assisting the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office with the investigation.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office at 502-633-4324, Shelby County dispatch at 502-633-2323, or the NCMEC hotline at 1-800-843-5678.
