Two juveniles have been arrested in a shooting that killed a Louisville teenager and injured two other teens as they waited for a school bus.
The drive-by shooting occurred on the morning of September 22 at approximately 6:30 as 16-year-old Tyree Smith, a student at Eastern High School, and two other students waited for a school bus.
The deadly shooting took place at Dr. W.J. Hodge Street and West Chestnut Street, in the Russell neighborhood. The two injured juveniles have since recovered.
The two juveniles arrested for committing the crime, both 16-years-old, have been charged with complicity to murder, complicity to first-degree assault and complicity to second-degree assault, Louisville police said Thursday. The suspects were both charged with complicity because they acted together, Jefferson County prosecutors said.
Police were initially searching for a gray Jeep with an Illinois license plate. The vehicle, which was spotted near the scene on surveillance video, was found in St. Matthews in the parking lot of Jamestown Apartments, off Breckinridge Lane. The vehicle had been set on fire.
Louisville Police Chief Erika Shields said it’s not known if the driver of the Jeep was involved in the crime or merely witnessed the shooting.
Police said the investigation continues and more arrests are possible.
