A central Kentucky elementary school teacher has been arrested on a DUI charge after being found passed out in the school parking lot.
Friday afternoon, police in Anderson County responded to Saffell Street Elementary School after 31-year-old Chris Harrod pulled into the school parking lot and struck a sign before parking, according to media reports.
When police arrived, they found Harrod in the truck with the engine running, and the suspect apparently unconscious.
Officers woke Harrod up and immediately detected a strong odor of alcohol. He was sluggish and sweating profusely and had bloodshot eyes.
He refused a field sobriety test.
Harrod was arrested and charged with DUI and lodged in the Shelby County Detention Center.
Anderson County Schools Superintendent Sheila Mitchell told media outlets that Harrod left school grounds earlier that day before returning. Mitchell said in a statement Harrod has resigned from his teaching position.
“Chris Harrod left campus early Friday morning and returned in the afternoon, not on duty when he had interaction with local law enforcement and the school SRO,” Mitchell said. “He was very apologetic and resigned his position on Tuesday morning.”
