An eastern Kentucky woman has been jailed after intentionally setting a mobile home on fire with a female asleep inside.

Monday night at approximately 8:45, the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office responded to Ray Johnson Road, about eight miles north of London, after 37-year-old Sheena D. Johnson, of London, set a mobile home on fire. Upon arriving at the scene, the sheriff’s office said deputies noted heavy smoke coming from the residence, and learned through investigation that Johnson had set the fire and then ran into a nearby home.

Additionally, deputies learned that the mobile home had been occupied and that a neighbor alerted the female resident, who was asleep, about the fire. The victim was transported to a local hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

While deputies were on scene, Johnson emerged “from a nearby residence and created a disturbance screaming and cursing and following arrest scuffled with deputies briefly before being taken into custody,” Laurel County Sheriff John Root said.

Johnson, when asked why she started the fire, responded, “Why not?” and that she was there to “cleanse this place.”

She was charged with first-degree arson, attempted murder, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest and lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Center.
