Grayson County High School’s Danny Clark has announced his retirement as head coach of the Cougar baseball program.

Clark was the head coach of the Cougars for 18 seasons taking the team to the regional tournament 17 times with an overall record of 345-276.

“Being named head baseball coach at my alma mater was a dream come true in 2003,” Clark told K105. “As I step away now, I have nothing but a sense of pride and optimism for the future. I’m proud of all the improvements to our facilities that have been made. It’s definitely been a labor of love because of the passion and work ethic instilled in me by my former coaches Don Lee, and Jim Alvey.”

A GCHS alum, Clark began his time in high school at Pleasure Ridge Park in Louisville, but transferred to Grayson County where he became a standout athlete.

“Moving here from PRP in Louisville because of a broken home I needed father figures in my life and GCHS provided so many,” said Clark. “Coach (Don) Lee, Coach (Jim) Alvey, Coach Vic Clark, Coach Bill Lee, Coach Don Rawlings, Coach Charlie Crain, Coach Bill Embry, Coach Mic Huffman, Coach Mike Houchin and teachers Randell Smith, Emma Sapp, Mike Geary, David White, Teddy White, Mike Shull, Arnold Hack all helped make sure that I stay in line and provided support that all students/athletes need.”

Clark previously stepped away from the team following the 2015 season but returned to the dugout in 2017 after the year away.

With the announcement that he would retire, it allowed him to reflect on what he has accomplished as a head coach. Clark said “That what makes my profession so special because it takes a whole community effort to provide young student-athletes a place to get honest unbiased guidance that all young students need. It’s all I ever wanted to do professionally and having a successful career depended on so many factors. Going forward I have nothing but love and pride for our community as I look ahead for the next challenge. Thank you Grayson County.”

During his time in Leitchfield, Clark also coached the Cougar football team from 1996-2000.

This year, the Cougar baseball team finished with a 13-20 record and a loss in the 12th District semifinals to Edmonson County.
