A woman has been airlifted after striking the end of a guardrail on the Western Kentucky Parkway.

Monday afternoon at approximately 5:00, the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office, Leitchfield Fire and Police Departments and EMS responded to the accident near the 105-mile marker of the westbound parkway.

Based on marks at the scene, a Toyota Corolla, for unknown reasons, drove onto the middle shoulder of the roadway before crossing all three westbound lanes and striking a guardrail, apparently head-on, crumpling about 25 feet of guardrail and flipping the Corolla onto its top.

The vehicle left about 75 yards of yaw marks (indicating the driver trying to regain control of the car) before hitting the guardrail.

The female driver, who suffered serious injuries, was extricated from the vehicle by firefighters using the jaws of life.

She was transported to Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center and then airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital.

The parkway was briefly shut down while first responders worked the scene.

The name of the driver was not available.
