The female inmate found deceased at the Barren County Detention was involved in a physical altercation before being taken to jail.
Sara McDaniel, 36, of Glasgow, was involved in a domestic dispute with her boyfriend 53-year-old Jefferey Guffey, according to a report by WCLU.com. One of the two had a handgun, but it’s unclear whether McDaniel or Guffey brandished the firearm.
McDaniel was arrested on April 24 and was found deceased in the jail later that afternoon. She was arrested on multiple charges, including fourth-degree assault (domestic violence) and possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine).
Upon Barren County deputies questioning Guffey about the altercation, he claimed McDaniel threw an ashtray at his head, according to the news outlet. He responded by hitting McDaniel in the head three times.
During a search of the couple’s property, police located methamphetamine.
Guffey was arrested and charged with fourth-degree assault (domestic violence) and possession of a controlled substance among other charges.
Kentucky State Police is investigating. An autopsy has been performed but McDaniel’s cause of death has not yet been established.
