Police arrested an armed Woodford County man as he left a University of Kentucky hospital after receiving a tip from another police department that the suspect was in the area.
A large police presence was at the University of Kentucky’s Chandler Hospital emergency room (on South Limestone Street) Thursday morning and university officials asked students and visitors to stay away from the area.
University of Kentucky Police Chief Joe Monroe said the man, Bryan Carroll, 44, of Versailles, was arrested as soon as he exited the hospital. He was carrying multiple firearms and had body armor on his person. Explosive devices were found in his car.
Carroll was booked into the Fayette County Detention Center and charged with four counts of third-degree use of a weapon of mass destruction, five counts of possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, possession of a weapon on school property, resisting arrest, fleeing or evading police (on foot), and possession of a controlled substance.
UK police were tipped off that Carroll may be at the hospital by the Versailles Police Department. Versailles police told UK authorities that Carroll was dangerous and could be at the hospital to visit a friend.
The university sent out a campus alert around 11:00 Thursday morning asking people to avoid the area. University officials said other parts of the campus were safe and operating normally. Officials gave the all-clear about four hours later.
The FBI, UK PD and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were on the scene and conducted a four hour investigation.
Police cordoned off the area around Carroll’s Versailles home while law enforcement searched the residence.
