Security for Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron was beefed up by Kentucky legislators who added $500,000 to the budget for around the clock security.

Cameron has received numerous death threats, according to state Sen. Chris McDaniel, R-Taylor Mill, the state Senate budget chairman.

“We have heard that there were more death threats against Daniel Cameron last year than any other elected official in the country except President Trump,” McDaniel said. “We figured it would take five people to do the job with salaries and benefits, so we appropriated $100,000 a person.”

Cameron initially began receiving death threats in the aftermath of the Breonna Taylor case.

Wesley F. Clay, 29, of Olathe, Kansas, has been charged for threatening to kill Cameron in a call to a tip line set up for the Taylor case.

In July 2020, over 100 protestors converged on Cameron’s home and conducted a sit-in, also protesting the handling of the Breonna Taylor case. Police arrested 87 protestors and charged each with intimidating a participant in a legal process, disorderly conduct and criminal trespassing.

Last year, a General Assembly review committee approved a $300,000 contract with the Graymoor-Devondale Police Department (GDPD) where Cameron lives in the St. Matthews area of Jefferson County. That contract expires on June 30.

It’s unclear if the new security expenditure, if approved by Gov. Andy Beshear, will result in another contract with the GDPD or possibly other department or agencies.

“We will decide that close to June 30,” Deputy Attorney General Barry Dunn said Thursday, before adding that Cameron continues to receive threats.
