A man fleeing police inadvertently drove to an eastern Kentucky county jail sally port.
Whitley County Sheriff Jeff Shelley said that Wednesday morning at approximately 3:00, deputies were notified that Tennessee authorities were in pursuit of a stolen vehicle. As the pursuit entered Whitley County, Kentucky State Police attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver, 33-year-old Scotty Inman, of Knoxville, Tennessee, continued to flee.
Police eventually deployed spike strips, Shelley said, damaging the tires but Inman continued driving on shredded tires as the chase entered Williamsburg.
In a further attempted to evade police, Inman drove down a road that leads to the Whitley County Detention Center, with Inman stopping at the sally port entrance to the jail, according to Shelley. The suspect then exited the vehicle and fled on foot. He was quickly captured, though, by state police and Whitley County deputies.
After Inman was detained, officers located counterfeit money and marijuana in the car.
Inman’s girlfriend, who was a passenger, was in possession of methamphetamine and told police she was “shooting meth into his veins” as Inman fled law enforcement.
Inman faces over 20 charges as a result of the chase, including multiple counts of first-degree wanton endangerment of a police officer, DUI, receiving stolen property, two counts of fleeing or evading police (in a motor vehicle, on foot), criminal possession of a forged instrument, resisting arrest, and criminal mischief along with several other counts.
He was lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center.
