The mayor of a small central Kentucky town has been killed in a mowing accident.

Scottie Ernst, the mayor of Stanford, the county seat of Lincoln County, died Tuesday afternoon after a lawn mower flipped over on top of him. Lincoln County Coroner Marcum Farris told media outlets that Ernst died of asphyxiation.

Ernst was mowing an area off Martin Luther King Boulevard, near a site where a replica of Fort Logan is being constructed.

He was elected mayor of Stanford, population of nearly 4,000, in 2018. The town was founded in 1775, making it one of the oldest settlements in Kentucky.

According to Ernst’s social media pages, he graduated from Lincoln County High School in 1977 and Mid-America College of Funeral Services in 1981.
