State Rep. Samara Heavrin has begun her first term as the 18th District representative for Grayson County and a portion of Hardin County as the General Assembly has convened for its three-month session.
“It is such a privilege to serve the people of my district in Frankfort,” Heavrin said. “These are my friends and neighbors and I am committed to representing their views in the General Assembly.”
Legislative committee assignments were made public upon the first day of the session and Heavrin will serve on several key committees, including the House Committee’s on Veterans, Military Affairs, and Public Protection, Transportation, and Elections, Constitutional Amendments and Intergovernmental Affairs.
“These committee assignments reflect Rep. Heavrin’s tremendous talent, expertise and experience as well as this district’s priorities,” said Speaker David Osborne, of Prospect. “With these appointments, Rep. Heavrin is in a position to positively impact not only her district, but our entire commonwealth.”
After graduating from WKU in 2014, Heavrin, a Republican from Leitchfield, moved to Washington, D.C. where she participated in a semester-long internship with U.S. Congressman Brett Guthrie. In January 2015, she began working as an aide to U.S. Senator Rand Paul.
In January 2017, she moved back to Kentucky to serve as Kentucky State Treasurer Allison Ball’s Unclaimed Property Director, but in short order was promoted to Director of Initiatives in Ball’s office.
The 2020 General Assembly regular session is scheduled to end on April 15.
Heavrin won a special election in November to fill the one-year remaining on former Rep. Tim Moore’s term, who stepped down to spend more time in christian ministry. She was sworn-in by Grayson County Judge-Executive Kevin Henderson in early December.
